Her mother's breath came heavy over the line. "This isn't the time. Just promise me you won't open that door tonight."

Amara's voice trembled. "You're scaring me. Who is he?"

There was silence, broken only by the storm outside. Finally, her mother spoke, her tone low and heavy.

"His name is Kenechukwu... but we used to call him Kene. Amara, before you were born, he was—"

A loud crash echoed through the line. Her mum's voice cut off, followed by static.

"Mummy? Hello? Mummy!" Amara cried into the phone, but the call had ended.

Her heart hammered as she stared at the screen. She tried calling back, but it didn't connect. Number unavailable.

The silence in her room thickened. Then—thump. A sound came from the balcony.

Amara's breath hitched. She turned slowly, her eyes fixed on the window. Through the rain-streaked glass, a shadow shifted.

Her phone buzzed again. She almost dropped it.

Unknown Number: "You deserve the truth, Amara. I've waited long enough."

Her throat went dry. He was still there. Watching. Waiting.

Every instinct screamed at her to run, but her feet felt nailed to the floor.

And then—her doorknob rattled.

Slow. Deliberate.

Amara's chest squeezed tight. She backed away, clutching her phone like a weapon.

But before she could move further, her phone lit up one more time.

New Message from Mum: "If he finds you, don't look into his eyes. Whatever you do, don't."

Amara's knees nearly buckled. Her mum's words were like fire in her veins.

She whispered to herself, shaking, "What are you hiding from me, Mum? Who is Kene... really?"

Outside, the rattling stopped. Silence.

But Amara knew—it wasn't over.
