The phone rang twice before her friend picked up.
“Girl, I haven’t seen you in three months,” Sandra said, laughing lightly, relieved to finally hear her voice. “Did you relocate to Mars?”
There was a pause on the other end. Then a half-hearted chuckle.
“I’ve been… busy,” her friend replied. “But I’ll make time soon. We need to talk.”
Sandra perked up. “Really? Talk like ‘I landed my dream job’ talk, or ‘Mr. Right finally put a ring on it’ talk?”
Silence.
Not the playful kind. The heavy, something’s-wrong kind.
“We’ll talk when we see,” her friend said flatly—and ended the call.
Sandra stared at her phone, lips slightly parted.
“What was that?” she muttered to herself. “Did I call at a bad time? Or… is something wrong?”
Before she could dwell too much on it, she heard the familiar sound of a key turning in the front door.
